I love it when people
underestimate me. I try not to be so sensitive about what other people
think but it’s hard when these things happen over and over again.
Incident #1- I’m doing a half marathon out of town. I’ve done 100+
races with more than 40 of them half’s. Most of my travel gear is
fitness or running apparel. So inevitably at packet pickup people
assume I’m running the 5k or 10k. Even though there are clearly marked
lines for each distance and I’m standing in line for the half marathon
they assume I’m wrong. Because I’m a curvy girl and don’t fit their
image of what a runner looks like. Forget the fact that there are
runners of all ages, sizes and paces at every race. Every once in a while I get a
condescending “good for you”. Eff them. Don’t pat me on the head like
I’ve achieved some great feat as a fat girl. I trained for this. I
run/bike 20+ miles a week. How dare you ruin a perfectly good day for
me. Worse than that is the person handing me my t-shirt was like “is
this your first half?” God I hate people.
Incident #2- I always take local fitness classes when I travel. For
people who travel a lot that haven’t discovered Class Pass it is
awesome. You can sign up for fitness classes at multiple gyms in the
area for a monthly fee equal to your typical monthly gym fee. Way
cheaper than paying for a day pass and a lot more options.
So I get to the studio early. It’s just me and the instructor at
first. She was very nice to me. We chat it up while we’re waiting for
the rest of the class to arrive. I tell her I’m in town for the race
and she is clearly surprised. She tells me to modify if I need to since
my legs may be sore. A couple songs into the class she says “wow,
you’re really fit”. I know she didn’t mean anything negative by it and
that I should have taken it as a compliment. But what sticks with me is
that she decided I wasn’t fit when she looked at me. That her first
impression was that I wasn’t fit. That no matter how many races I run
or classes that I take people will always see me as unfit and I will
constantly have to prove myself.

My Own Biggest Loser Week
I just got back from a week long fitness convention in Florida. This is the third one that I have attended but definitely the most positive experience that I have ever had. There is nothing more motivating than a few thousand fitness professionals and the best instructors in the world at a beautiful destination resort.
I lost 3 pounds during the past week. To those of you who are dedicated to your diet and exercise and lose 3-5 lbs every week this might not seem like a lot. But to someone like me whose weight plateaued a long time ago, this is amazing.
I know that working out several hours a day and eating lots of small meals between my workouts was key. This along with the variety of workouts that I was doing and the fact that I was getting a good night of sleep every night. These are all things that seem like they could be modified to fit into my real life. Because I had a large dinner out with dessert and a glass of wine every night. I didn't feel deprived. My digestive issues were better. My energy still had dips in the afternoon but it was definitely more stable.
I am terrified that those 3 pounds will be right back next Sunday when I weigh myself. But there is a little voice in my head that tells me that this could be my jump start. This could be my biggest loser week. I spent a week at the ranch and learned what works for me. Now I just have to figure out how to make things work now that I'm back home with all the responsibility and stress that come with work and family.
I think its also important to point out that my attitude was much better than it normally is. I was surrounded by people of all races, ages and sizes. Sure, there were plenty of size 2 "fitness models" walking around but there were just as many curvy (or dare I say fat) fit folks walking around. And no one said anything bad to them. Everyone accepted that they were instructors and had just as much right to be there as everyone else.
I found myself walking around in my swimsuit top and shorts or in my swimsuit and a t-shirt. I would never do that at home. The moment I am out of the pool, I am wrapped from head to toe in a beach towel and hustling my way into the locker room. Maybe I need to stop doing that. Maybe if I pretend to be confident and comfortable in my own skin, I'll start to feel like it. Maybe this is the beginning of me loving me just a little more than I care about what other people think about me.

Marriage is Hard
I often get frustrated with my husband because it seems like he asks for permission to do everything and/or volunteers to inconvenience himself for no good reason. Whether it is work or family, he frequently invites people to take advantage of him by taking on more than any one else.
I don't think people should steamroll their way through life but there is no reason to accommodate everyone to the point that your are putting yourself last. Sometimes these incidents lead to friction between us which I'd like to avoid. I am working on taking a breath and evaluating situations before I react. I have a tendency to jump to conclusions and overreact and that never ends well.
I'm trying to consider the alternative. Do I want my husband to be so brash that he never considers someone else's opinion? Of course not. I have dated men who considered me as an afterthought. Who blatantly commented on how beautiful other women were to me but never complimented me. Who forgot to pick me up for dates. Who always made me feel guilty for expecting any attention. Those guys were jerks. I never would have married those guys. I didn't have healthy relationships with them. I didn't value myself and I let them treat me like crap. My husband would never do those things. He is a very loving and supportive person.
Maybe my husband will stop being so accommodating as his self confidence increases. Maybe he won't. He's already been like this for 37 years. Maybe I just have to accept that we are very different people and that this is one of those things that I just have to learn to deal with. Pointing out where he is weak doesn't make me strong and it definitely doesn't make our relationship stronger. Ugh.

65 Days and Green with Envy
Social media is making me jealous. I used to have a lot of friends who were curvy and fit like me. Now they are all skinny and uber fit and I'm on the only curvy one left. Sure, I have plenty of friends who are obese and inactive but I don't want to be lumped into that category.
Two of my curvy friends starting taking Zumba classes. I encouraged them because I love Zumba and it turned my life around 5 years ago. So of course now they go non-stop and have lost tons of weight. They know have their own clique of front row divas and know as many instructors as I do. At least they could have lost weight by attending my classes. No, that would have sucked more. Nevermind.
A handful of other friends starting running. I have been running road races for 20+ years. It is my time to meditate and reflect. Even though sometimes my body hates it, my brain is always in the mood to run. I always recommend running to people because it's cheap; a pair of shoes and a sports bra and you're good to go. Of course they all now do road races regularly and are much faster than I am.
I know I should be happy for them but I feel like everything that defines me has been hijacked by other people. So you've been doing something that I love for a short period of time and are better at it than me. Awesome. Please show me another picture of yourself in your bra top and your short shorts winning your age group. I know. It's childish.
The reality is that they were all bigger than me and now they are all smaller than me and it pisses me off. They were all more disciplined than I have every been about my diet and exercise and, as a result, they have seen amazing results. I can't be jealous that they worked hard and got rewarded in the end. But I am. I am happy for them (to their faces) but my insides are boiling inside and with every happy post I just want to punch the computer screen.
I know. If I were happy with me I wouldn't be so jealous of them. If I tried harder and was proud of my accomplishments I wouldn't waste so much time obsessing over theirs. Believe me, I would never admit to being this shallow to outside of this blog. I am pretty ashamed of myself.
I'd like to believe that this will motivate me. That the chance to one-up the people who accidentally one-upped me by getting their shit together will be the final piece to motivate me but I doubt it. Somewhere within me is the motivation. I just need to find it. And do squats instead of logging onto Facebook.

My Newest Fitness Dream
I would like to be a big fish in a small pond. In Zumba there are Jammers, education specialists and special presenters that draw crowds of people to learn their choreography and work out with them. I love going to events but I don't think I want to be one of those people. The time and travel commitment. A lot of people using my original ideas in their classes. Neither of these really appeals to me. Plus, I have no desire to deal with the drama that will inevitably come with it.
But to be a trainer in one of my water fitness specialties. That I can do. I don't know if I can make a big enough impression at the live certification events because there is always someone there who is willing to go above and beyond to be the center of attention. Even if I perform amazingly, I don't usually get the attention because I blend in with the rest of the group. But for most of these certifications there are home videos that you have to make to demonstrate your proficiency as a teacher. In my home gym with my members I can be a rock star. And if I can convey that to the home office, maybe I'll get a shot. Maybe I'll apply for a position the next time there is a call. I would love to inspire other people. I would love to show people that you don't have to be a skinny white girl to be fit.
I feel like this is an achievable goal that is on the fringe enough to keep me out of the drama of the local mainstream instructors. Because lets be real, water fitness definitely takes a back seat to land aerobics and I like that. I like that outside of the pool a lot of people don't even know that I teach fitness classes. I want to be the shining star in my own little corner of fitness.

The Birth of a Fitness Instructor
When I first became a Zumba instructor, a little over 3 years ago, I was shocked at how unfriendly other instructors were at jam sessions, conventions, training classes and other events. Women are definitely cliquey and catty by nature but Zumba seemed to bring out the worst in a lot of people. Most of the large studios in my area had so much drama among the instructors and their "pet" members that it was often uncomfortable to work out there. I used to take another instructor's class at least once a week but I stopped going because there was so much negative energy.
A year after getting my Zumba license I became AFAA group exercise certified and then AEA aquatic fitness certified the following year. To maintain these certifications I attend a lot of non-Zumba events. The people at the non-Zumba events were so much friendlier and more open than I was expecting. There are always a couple of divas in the room but nothing on the level of Zumba drama. What is it that makes some Zumba people so catty? Why do I find myself sitting in a corner by myself when I go to a Zumba event outside of my city but make 10 new friends every time its any other certification?
I have to admit part of it is definitely me. As my confidence as an instructor has grown (which I definitely have to credit to Zumba) so has my willingness to network and reach out to people. Maybe sometimes I was sitting in the corner by myself because I didn't appear friendly. Why should someone reach out to me if I'm not going to reach out to anyone else?
This Friday I am going to a master class with a local Zumba Jammer. I have all but sworn off these events because of how un-fun they generally are. But this Friday I'm going to walk in with a smile on my face and my expectations high. I'm going to talk to people and dance my ass off. I'm going to do my best to ignore the negative energy and focus on the positive. I have to believe that people who teach such an awesome class that has totally changed my life aren't all bad.

Self Conscious in the City
I am super important. At least that's what my subconscious thinks. In my brain everyone is always looking at me and judging me. I'm not sure when this phenomenon started but I'd sure like to make it stop.
Yesterday I went to spinning class with my husband for the first time in a year and a half. I always struggle when I ride a bike because I can never get the seat comfortable or I'm gripping the handle bars too hard (both leaving me sore for days after). I have been told that biking once a week will reduce my running injuries and improve my overall muscle tone. I know this true because I can feel the changes in my body after just a few weeks back on the wagon. This is what should have been going through my head last night. I should have just listened to the instructors voice, enjoyed the loud music and the dimly lit room and gotten in the zone. Instead this is what was going through my brain: Why didn't I wear a more supportive bra? Does anyone notice how much my boobs are shaking? Am I pedaling fast enough? Do I look like I'm working as hard as everyone else? Is the instructor watching me? Does she think I'm pedaling fast enough? Is my stomach hanging out?
A similar dialogue runs through my mind in almost every other situation in my life. This leads to headaches, back pain, depression, heart palpitations, panic attacks and so much more. I have been working on daily yoga and meditation and putting myself in situations where I am not comfortable while pushing myself not hide in the corner. I am definitely a work in progress. Sometimes I have good days, other times not so good.
When I was single I was so much more self confident. I went places by myself. I did challenging home improvement projects alone. I was kind of a bad ass. But I was also lonely, a workaholic and a heavy drinker. Somewhere in the middle there is a healthy 37 year old woman just dying to get out. I think people say that 40 is so fabulous because you finally leave all this immature B.S. behind and you're ready to kick life in the ass. I sure hope I figure it out before then.
